sex vs image
innocence (1978)
Michael’s gullibility about sex worried Colomby so much that one day he took him upstairs to one of the small, second-story offices at Cherokee Studios for a man-to-man talk. “Michael,” he started, “you’re a young man. You’re about to get out there in the world and meet a lot of people — a lot of women. And you might run into some interesting situations. Sometimes it’s difficult for you to go to your parents or your brothers and talk about those kind of things. But I want you to know that I’m there for you. That any time you need a friend, in any kind of situation, I’ll help you.”
Michael smiles. He was touched. “God, that is so sweet of you,” he said.
“But I already have someone I confide in like that.” “Oh, great,” Colomby replied, mildly surprised. “Can I ask who?” “Diana Ross” Michael replied.

Sex (June 1992)
MJ: What am I gonna do… I don’t want to die without knowing about… having a real relationship with a women or being involved… I don’t… I was involved but we never did anything… we never really had sex…
G: But that was your decision, that wasn’t her’s, I mean.
Apparently he tells Glenda he never had sex. He tells Lisa the same.
LMP (1994)
He told me he was still a virgin.
[…]
When he decided to first kiss me, he just did it. He was instigating everything. The physical stuff started happening, which I was shocked at. I had thought that maybe we wouldn’t do anything until we got married, but he said, “I’m not waiting!”
Something doesn’t add up here

MJ & LMP – Primetime live with diane sawyer (1995)
This side glance seemed a bit too obvious and just for appearances. It’s possible for two things to coexist: he could be playing us while still having a genuine relationship.
How can you come off as insincere when you’re being authentic?
He seemed to actively undermine the perception of his relationship being real and to actually favor plausible deniability to keep his image intact. While at the same time getting street credibility as a straight guy. The fact that he couldn’t fathom how that might tarnish his reputation is part of the problem.

LIVING WITH MICHAEL JACKSON (2003)
Unironically asking him about “making love”, and expecting an honest answer.
He’s playing you. He could charm the pants off girls right in front of you, and wouldn’t notice.
Honestly, I can’t decide what’s more outrageous: Bashir’s delusional conviction that he’s the man for this job, or his jaw-dropping absence of any kind of charm, sophistication, subtlety or grace.

The comment from this YouTube user highlights another instance where it appears MJ may have utilized women for public relations, similar to how he reportedly did with Lisa on various occasions.
A Reddit user articulates it well: “That’s who he was comfortable with the public knowing he was around.” This notion is further supported by his own words in his memoir, Moonwalk: “Another love was Brooke Shields. We were romantically serious for a while. There have been a lot of wonderful women in my life, women whose names wouldn’t mean anything to the readers of this book, and it would be unfair to discuss them because they are not celebrities and are unaccustomed to having their names in print. I value my privacy and therefore I respect theirs as well.”1Jackson, M. (1988). Moonwalk (1st ed.). New York: Doubleday. It seems he deliberately links mentioning Brooke Shields with the names he chooses not to disclose.
Brooke’s comments, such as “You need me as a friend” and “What are you trying to prove,” could be interpreted as suggesting he might be gay and in need of a beard. This situation illustrates how his actions as well as the reactions to it can easily lead to misunderstandings.
At the core of his behavior lies a person fiercely protective of their private life, managing a carefully crafted public persona. This persona portrays him as a childlike, innocent, kind, and socially awkward figure. He not only created this image but also controlled and maintained it. This is not the person that most people have in mind when they talk about Michael Jackson.
It’s astonishing for those who weren’t around to witness it firsthand how MJ was perceived in 1984. Fast forward ten years, and the contrast is nothing short of jaw-dropping.

This was the most debated double kiss in history! I remember some people thought he was told to do it but I don’t know why they thought that. (Like a lot of viewers I blinked and missed the second kiss.) I can’t imagine him being told to do that. And she seems shocked and amused by him kissing her a second time. And it looked like he gave a tight smile or smirk right before he kissed her. Then he shaped his lips in a way like you do when you’re gonna kiss someone on the lips but then she moved her head so it faced away from the camera and when she pulled away it looked like he hadn’t managed to land directly on her lips but just to the side. People thought he might have felt embarrassed then.
Men sometimes started taking liberties by kissing women on the lips after they won at awards ceremonies so a lot of people thought he was suddenly feeling his oats and taking liberties. Some people thought it was funny and sexistly assumed any girl would want to be kissed by him but some people didn’t and thought it was wrong and didn’t think it was funny. Some people felt wary of him after that.
After that in the car when the cameras were on them he suddenly grabbed Brooke Shields and tried to kiss her and she exclaimed something like “No! Stop! You need me as a friend.” People debated the exact wording but could hear and see enough to understand she thought he knew he shouldn’t kiss her. So then that made a lot of people rethink what they had seen him do earlier to Irene and thought he was being a jerk. I didn’t see them in the car that night and can’t find a video of it on YouTube but if you can find it please send me the link.
I haven’t seen it yet but it turns out Brooke talked about that moment in her brand new 2023 documentary called Pretty Baby. Soon after that night the media said she said that he had tried to kiss her once before when her limo was pulling away and he reached his head inside the window and ended up smashing his face into hers. She was furious and called him afterwards and said what are you trying to prove! etc and that she would talk to him about it the next time she saw him and that when she did she told him off for it. So the implication was that he would have known not to try to kiss her the second time and was taking liberties and for the sake of the camera. People wondered if the first time he didn’t realize that she wouldn’t be OK with him kissing her, especially since he seemed relatively inexperienced and shy and socially awkward. Or if he was being an uninvolved 70s male adolescent who was forcing what he wanted on Brooke Shields just like so many older men in the entertainment industry did.
She also said in the documentary they would go to dinner and that paparazzi would already be there waiting for them when they showed up and that she had no idea how they knew they were going to be there unless he called them. She said they went to obscure restaurants.
Black or White – Penis Edition (1992)
MJ: I was talking with Kathy, cause she’s a nurse. Oh, because Randy the other day was calling Kathy prejudice and stuff like that and she’s like, “I’m not prejudice, I like white people. I have a preference, I would never sleep with a white man.” And we were talking about that. (laughing)
G: Really?
MJ: (laugh) She goes (laugh)
G: Oh no…
MJ: She like, “No, I would never sleep with a white man because their penises are just too pink” or too red or something.
G: (gasps)
MJ: And their veins show! (laughing)
G: Oh my god!
MJ: (laughing)
G: Oh!
MJ: She like, “No, I wouldn’t mind, you know, doin’ stuff with a white man because I’m not prejudice, I like white people” and stuff, “But ooh, god, I could never I could never lay down with a white man!”
G: She said that?
MJ: Because their penis is all pink and its all red, you know. She got these old men, you know, that sometimes she gotta put catheters on them and stuff like that.
G: Ugh!
MJ: She’s like, “(i) oh when the white man’s old. His penis shrinks up and you gotta jerk it up” and (i) find it and stuff! (laugh)
G: Oh my god.
MJ: Like, “Black men aren’t like that.” You know? “Even when they’re old, their penis don’t shrink up that little. And they’re not all red and wrinkled.”
G: Ewwww.
MJ: (laugh) I like, “Oh my God.”
G: (i).
MJ: She said, “I like them thick”. And she’s like, “I just can’t be making love with a white man. There’s no red or pink stuff inside me!” (laughs)
G: Oh, gross! That’s what she said?
MJ: Yeah.
G: Eww.
MJ: “But I’m not prejudice, it’s just my preference.” (i).

Spotted Dick (1992)
MJ: We have this thing, it’s a (inaudible). We had them in London (he pronounces it so British, it’s cute), I didn’t, I didn’t taste it- EAGHH. Actually, when I heard it, I heard about it a long time ago. Did you see the movie King Ralph?
G: No.
MJ: There was this pastry out in London in stuff, and it’s called a Spotted Dick.
MJ and G: (both laughing)
MJ: (imitating someone else) ” It looks good.”
G: Sounds terrible! (laughs). That’s funny.
MJ: (in posh English accent) Would you like a spotted dick? (it’s an English dessert)
G: Sounds interesting (Laughing)
MJ: I don’t think so.
G: (Laughs)

Gift-wrapping bulges in gold foil is not inherently bad though.
It also doesn’t undermine singing or dancing, it might in fact enhance it.
Whoever thinks this is wrong, is on the wrong side of history.
